Johannesburg

From July till October 2016, Kunsthalle3000 was located on Beyers Naudé Square in the heart of Johannesburg, a square that is strongly connected with political and social protest in the city's history.
Kunsthalle3000 was located right in front of the public library where a field marked by missing cobblestones became the host for free education, meditative journeys, edebile poems and alchemy by:

Uluntu Symbiosis

Hard surfaces get pierced too.

A message has been stamped on all hard surfaces to be found in and around Kunsthalle3000. Speaking in multiple languages, this is also a silent intervention and quiet invitation for a community engaged daily in processes of change and exchange to ruminate on what limits in the possibility to create change might be.

Hiding Hole

A demonstration of a thick, winter jacket, sourced from a trader across the road, that can be worn at night and on cold days. On hot days, the jacket can unfold into a camouflaged brick surface that fits perfectly into the hole; hidden, to be retrieved again that night.

Burial of the Kunsthalle3000 Time Capsule

… 1 year later
A literal closure of public space: While the former Kunsthalle3000 got filled with bricks, the area around the Public Library got fenced in to prevent skateboarding and loitering. Fences are a big whoop in SA!
